Join friends and neighbors at the Buckland Public Library on Saturday afternoon, March 3rd, from 1:00-2:30 or so to learn how to download e-books, audio-books and videos to your computer or portable device for free using your C/WMARS library card.

The presentation will include an overview of the C/W MARS digital books website (http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org), including how to browse or search for audiobooks, ebooks, and videos, the checkout procedure, and downloading and transferring. You will learn about the software needed for this procedure, which devices will work with library content, and more. A few portable devices will be on hand for patron use, but participants are welcome to bring their own devices. (Prior to the workshop, check to see if yours will work with OverDrive products by going to http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/. )

The CWMARS, Inc. digital collection includes over 4000 ebooks, 2200 audiobooks, and over 500 videos. There are 75 “always available” audiobooks, and over 400 A&E, History Channel and Biography videos in the “always available” format, as well as the traditional “one copy, one user” items. Also available are over 600 Disney Digital Online titles.

C/WMARS Access Services Associate Cynthia Laino will present the program free of charge. Refreshments will be served; for these, modest donations will be welcomed. The Buckland Public Library is located at 30 Upper Street — just off Route 112, five minutes from Shelburne Falls. This institution is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

This summer, well-known local artist and teacher Polly Anderson will be offering 1- and 2-day classes for adults and kids (some age restrictions apply) in creating masks, pop-up books and treasure maps, as well as in sculpting geckos, weaving, and caricature drawing. Sign up now for 1 session — or all 7 — by calling Polly (625-9763), or by completing a registration form at the library. Cost: $15-$30.

Thank you, patrons, for limiting your carbon footprint through use of the Buckland Public Library.  Here are a few examples of what y’all do:

-Reduce consumption by borrowing, not buying.

-Reduce air pollution by carpooling; use the reserved parking spot for high-occupancy and low-emissions vehicles.

-Re-use books and movies; a single library book or movie may be enjoyed by several dozen patrons.

-[Re]Cycle to 30 Upper Street  – and park your bicycles in our new rack!

-Read about the environmental crisis, learn how to prolong the health of ecosystems large and small, and prepare your family for a changing lifestyle paradigm.

-Return library materials in good condition, and return to your library for another visit!

When you come by 30 Upper Street this week, you will park with ease between the newly painted lines in the library lot. You will appreciate newly sprouted grass (a low-mow variety.) You will notice new tables in the community room. Of course you will browse our displays of new book, movies and magazines, utilize wi-fi, or simply enjoy the company of neighbors! While you are here, be sure to take a peek at the Wallace Nutting artwork and books on display in the community room; they’ll “whet your appetite” for the upcoming Buckland Historical Society talk on this amazing man at 7pm on 6/4/11.

Renovations continue, but the library is open for business!

The Buckland Public Library will be closed during the 2nd two weeks in February. Come stock up on books and movies now!

The renovation and expansion of the Buckland Public Library is nearing completion. We will begin moving books and videos into the addition late in February. In March, the historic section will be renovated; we’ll move the adult collection back into it in April. Throughout the spring, we’ll also be focused on furnishings — acquiring new computers, purchasing furniture, hanging artwork, and posting signs, for example. Once the ground has thawed, the planting of grass, ground-covers and shrubbery will begin in earnest. Of course we’ll host a re-opening party, but have not yet set the date.

If you have concerns about the recent changes on our site, we completely understand.  We are in the process of updating the website after we discovered that the old site was having a problem with spam and malware.

The good news: the new system is running and has all the security patches applied.  The bad news: we lost some of our content and must work to recreate it.

Thank you for your patience.
